OTP Presents: Rodrigo y Gabriela, Hardcore Acoustic Duo from Mexico
Meet Rodrigo y Gabriela
They are the new definition of world music (or music from around the world). A girl and guy combo that play dueling acoustic guitars so fast it will make your head spin. Press play below, and read on…
Their story:
They met in Mexico and were both in separate metal bands. When they realized they could make better music together, they quit and formed Rodrigo y Gabriela. The duo then packed up and moved to Dublin, Ireland, and re-started their careers as street performers. Knowing only a few words in English (and trying to understand what the Irish call English), they were picked up to tour with famous Irish folksinger, Damien Rice. Thus began their new careers.
Although they have a lot of original songs, they’re most known for covering familiar rock classics like Metallica and Jimi Hendrix in their own acoustic inspirational way. Their new album, entitled “11:11″ pays tribute to their personal heroes (Jimi, Pantera and Carlos Santana among them). What they did here is very unique. They created a palatable link between young and old music tastes and added an international feel to music our generation grew up listening to. Imagine, the rebel rock your parents yelled was too loud and obscene when you were a teenager is now something you can discuss with your mom and dad as quality music. It’s a revolutionary breakthrough in mixed-genre tunes.
In a world where everything is sampled and digitally mastered, Rodrigo y Gabriela’s raw talent really shines through. Their incorporation of American music with Mexican influences in Europe is a sign that good music travels well. Through their music, Rodrigo y Gabriela show the world that nothing matters most than doing what you love and doing it well, wherever that may take you physically.
Here are a couple more good songs to get you started: a cover, an original and just a fucking great song.
Lucky for you, they are planning a tour of Australia in 2010 and if there is anything you need to do (laundry probably being one of them), you NEED to go check them out. Maybe do a little backpacking around Australia to compliment the musical voyage. Click Here for ticket info. Rock on.

Good review. I didn’t know how much I liked heavy metal until I started listening to their music. I have been digging Rodrigo y Gabriela so much that I gathered as many of their concert videos, interviews and guest appearances as I could find and created a website, the Rodrigo y Gabriela Fan Club. As the English would say, “cheers”!
Great Duo! I’ve heard tons of american collaborations but Mexicans by far are obviously doing the best. this song had me going up and down like a roller coaster. definitely a must have in music collection.
Great band!
